Heart Valve Disease
Valves are leaflets in the heart that allow for proper blood flow between heart chambers. The term "Heart Valve Disease" is used when a valve either fails to open properly (stenosis) or fails to close completely, allowing backward flow of blood (regurgitation). The sounds created by these abnormalities are commonly referred to as murmurs.
About the St. Francis Heart Valve Center
Located in Indianapolis, the St. Francis Midwest Heart Valve Center is the only center in Indiana focusing on heart valve disease where all your needs are met in one visit.

Physicians and staff are trained and experienced in the diagnosis, treatment, repair and replacement of heart valves. The surgeons at the center advocate valve repairs over valve replacements whenever possible. Valve repair surgery preserves the patient’s own heart valve so blood-thinning medications are not required. They have dedicated their careers to improving and advancing treatment of valvular heart disease and participate in ongoing clinical trials of next-generation valve techniques.
The St. Francis Heart Valve Center coordinates each patient’s care, including:
- Complete evaluation by heart valve specialists, including history and physical
- Transthoracic/transesophageal echocardiogram
